The Bavarian Motor Works (BMW) was founded in Munich in the early 1910's. It was an aircraft manufacturer and the current logo is designed to represent white propeller blades against a blue sky. The first automobile was produced in 1928.

The 60's brought the very popular 1500 which was a sporty family sedan.

In the 1970's BMW was pioneering many emerging technologies including advanced vehicle electronics and turbo charging. This was also the time when BMW of North America was established. The auto consumers who wanted both a luxury and sporty vehicle quickly became "Bimmer" owners. This was also the time when the three tier sport sedan range was introduced. It consisted of the 3, 5, and 7 series car and the performance M division was also started.

The BMW's ranges are diverse including wagons, sedans, coupes, sports cars and SUV's. The company opened its first US auto manufacturing plant in the 1990's and expanded its brand to include the MINI and the Rolls Royce.

The BMW Group employs over 8,000 people in the UK motor industry. They have three main production plants which include Oxford, Hams Hall and Rolls Royce Motor Cars Limited. BMW also employs an additional 11,000 in its strong UK dealer network.

The Oxford plant is the only place in the world that a MINI is built. This plant can manufacture 800 cars per day. A large proportion of MINIs are exported, about 70%. The Hams Hall plant is the engine plant for BMW. It produced over 372,000 engines in 2008. This plant supplies the engines for BMW 1, 3, 5 series and Z3 roadster and X3 model ranges. The Goodwood plant is the only place where Rolls Royce Motor Cars are built. There was 1,212 Rolls Royces produced in 2008.

It has an impressive V12 powered flagship engine and two all wheel drive models are available.

BMW X Series includes the X 1, 3, 5 and 6. This range has utility and flexibility with surefooted control and traction. Z4 is newly designed and is one of the best luxury roadsters available. It is stylish with a powerful engine and has a quick folding hardtop.

BMW M Series includes the M3, M5, M6, X5 M, and X6 M. The M series is BMW's high performance range which has power that is usually reserved for the track. They are stylish and have the latest high tech amenities.

The core of a BMW is engineering and technology and every detail of a BMW is designed with one thing in mind; enhancement of the joy of driving. Over the years BMW has introduced many innovative technologies and designs to improve power and performance.
