The Toyota Company was initially called the Toyoda Company and was named after Sakichi Toyoda. He was the mastermind behind this giant corporation which is a leader in the automotive industry. They changed the family name slightly so it could be made using eight brush strokes. In Japan eight is a lucky number so they saw this as a good sign. Here at Car Gap Insurance we sell Return to Invoice Gap, Contract Hire Gap Insurance and we even sell Gap insurance to Driving Instructor schools who own Toyotas. The first successful car prototype was developed in 1936 and was called the Toyoda AA Passenger model. The Toyota Crown was the first passenger car to be exported to the United States. The Crown is still being produced today and is Toyota's oldest sedan still in production. The Toyota Corona was introduced in Britain in 1965 and was imported exclusively by a small family business called Pride and Clark. This was the first Toyota dealership to be opened in the UK. The Corona was produced between 1957 and 2002.

There are two Toyota manufacturing plants producing new cars located in the UK. There is an engine plant in Deeside North Wales and a vehicle plant in Burnaston. The first car that was produced in the UK was the Carina.

Toyota keeps on improving its technology and coming out with superior innovations. The new Prius can drive under electric motor power by itself up to 31mph. The high torque of the electric motor gives you a fast and smooth start. It is also very quiet compared to a petrol engine. The best part is that the new Toyota Prius consumes no fuel at this speed, and therefore it doesn't produce any CO2 emissions. The Prius does not have to be plugged in to recharge the battery. The petrol engine powers the generator to recharge it.

The Prius is what you call a full hybrid and when it is driven above medium speeds it uses the 1.81 petrol engine and its two electric motors in synergy. This maximises the petrol engines operating efficiency and omits only 89g of CO2 at a combined fuel consumption of 72.4mpg. Another benefit is that depending on the driving conditions the battery can also be recharged by the electric motor.

There are sensors that constantly monitor the driving conditions. That way you are ensured the required amount of power is being produced. When you are overtaking another vehicle or during sudden acceleration the power comes from both energy sources. You get a seamless acceleration due to the fact that the petrol engine is being supported by the 60kw electric motor. The Prius can accelerate from 0 to 62mph in 10.4 seconds.

Instead of wasting the kinetic energy that is usually lost during braking or decelerating the electric motor acts as a generator and recharges the high power battery. When the vehicle is braking it consumes no fuel and produces zero emissions.

You also have the option of activating the Electric Vehicle mode (EV) to drive on just the electric motor for up to speeds of 31mph. There is no fuel or emissions in this mode. When you stop the petrol engine is shut off by the Stop and Start system to lower fuel consumption. Even though the petrol engine is shut off the other systems including air conditioning continue to function.

Toyota's latest breakthrough technology is the Toyota Optimal Drive. It is an entire range of new engines, transmissions and design innovations that is improving fuel economy and emissions across the Toyota range. The 1.33 litre VVT-I petrol in the Yaris, Auris Urban Cruiser models the Stop and Start technology is being used. This saves fuel and cuts down on emissions in urban conditions and helps boost combined fuel economy by up to 18%.

They have new engines which have reduced weight, optimised valve control, greater rigidity and lower internal friction. The innovations are applied differently depending on which model. However, all engines offer a significant increase in fuel economy and lower emissions.

The new 6 speed manual transmission which is available in the Auris, Urban Cruiser, and Yaris has a unique twin shaft design which makes changing gears easier. The efficiency and torque capacity is improved by the reduced size and number of components. The manual transmission on all the Auris, Avensis and iQ models have gearshift timing indicators which show the optimum time for gear changes.

Toyota offers a diversified range of vehicles that are fuel efficient and eco-friendly. Toyota has a strong British heritage and has been building cars in the UK since 1989. Both the Auris 5dr and Avensis are built in the UK. Many parts and materials are supplied by UK companies.

The all new iQ is compact and full of state of the art comfort technology. It is just 2.985 metres and offers room for up to four people. The Aygo is a compact, but spacious city car that has Toyota's Optimal Drive Technology. The Yaris also has Toyota Optimal Drive which gives this range enhanced performance, lower CO2 emissions and better fuel economy.

The new Verso is innovative, versatile and smart. It has the Easy Flat-7 System that makes it easy to accommodate seven people comfortably across three rows. The Avensis was the first one of the Toyota range to be redesigned with the Toyota Optimal Drive. It is loaded with innovative technology which boosts performance and improves fuel economy. The Urban Cruiser has the fuel efficiency of a city car and the internal space of a SUV. It has low emissions and plenty of style and room.

Toyota has a wide versatile range of vehicles that will fit everyone's needs. The company is dedicated to ongoing research to improve fuel efficiency and to make vehicles that are eco-friendly. Today, Toyota has auto making plants on six continents and employs over a quarter of a million people. It started out as a humble small company and today is one of the top leaders in the auto industry.
