The new Audi TT

If it ain't broke, don't fix it, although you are allowed a few subtle improvements. That's about all that has changed with the 'new' Audi TT, and the company have sensibly not tried anything too radical to alter their hugely popular sports coupe. While there is a choice of four new colours - two greys, red and a blue with pointless names - the shape remains the same.

Owners of the previous Audi TT will have been more than happy with its power and handling, but these have been improved on the newer model. While there is a choice of 1.8, 2.0 and 2.5 litre engines (plus the Quatro's 3.2 litre), relatively small when compared to other cars in this class, the turbocharger makes this unnoticeable. Economy ranges from around 48mpg for petrol models to 53mpg on the diesel version. These cars are deliciously fast, with superb handling to match.

The interior is an improvement over previous versions, too. Both the driver's cockpit and passenger seating are spacious, especially when matched against similar models from other manufacturers. The soft lighting adds a welcome but unnecessary touch of class to what is already a pleasant interior. Build quality and materials used are superb all round. The rear seating area is just large enough to be able to call this car a four-seater, but only a couple of under-tens could fit comfortably.

One improvement you shouldn't be able to see is the retractable spoiler. Audi have removed the slightly unsightly spoiler that slightly spoiled previous models and replaced it with an electric one that automatically kicks in at 75mph. Which is over the speed limit in this country. Only really useful if you are planning a trip to Germany.

Having said that, a trip to Germany in one of the new Audi TTs would be a dream for both driver and front passenger, as long as your rear passengers hadn't reached puberty. There's a pleasantly surprising amount of room in the shallow, but wide boot for all the luggage you would need for a trip to the continent. Great all round visibility would allow you to easily see that spoiler come into play.
