It has to be said that for many people the standard Peugeot 308 just didn’t quite work with its cross between a sporty front end and what looked like a people carrier at the rear. Whether it’s the extra length on the 308 SW that makes the difference or its bolder design details, who knows, but it certainly works better in terms of styling, as well as offering huge amounts of extra space.

At a cost of between £14,395 and £20,845, Peugeot’s 308 SW is available in a range of three diesel and five petrol engines and, despite its station wagon-like appearance, they all still manage to drive like saloons. The 150PS turbo petrol version offers a new six-speed gearbox allowing it to achieve 38mpg.

Like the 307 SW, the 308 version also offers 7-seater capacity, with all the seats being forward facing. The rearmost seats are removable for extra storage and all five of the rear seats can be folded flat. Like the 207 SW, the rear window opens to accommodate longer loads or simply to make loading the vehicle easier. The massive sunroof, which stretches right back over the heads of the back passengers, provides panoramic views for all, although with all the extra light in the vehicle, if you go for the lighter coloured trim and upholstery, some find the glare a little off-putting. With the touch of a button, however, the roof lining can be closed.

The fastest of all the Peugeot 308 SW models is the THP 175 petrol version which will take you from 0-62mph in 9.0 seconds and delivers a top speed of 134mph. All of the models handle well and provide a stable and comfortable driving experience, all in all making them one of the best medium-sized vehicles available for larger families. The good range of models also means that there is something to suit most people’s tastes and needs, and having retained the rather sporty-looking front end of the 308 saloon, the exterior styling of the car looks great too.
